Understanding Psychologists with Mental Disorders

Mental health issues such as burnout, compassion fatigue, mental health stigma, etc. are all factors that can be a contributing cause of the development of mental health disorders. Some psychologists though have decided to be involved in the mental health field due to the fact that they personally have a mental disorder and want to help others such as themselves. Overall, it is important to discuss the mental health disorders psychologists most commonly face to spread awareness and reduce mental health stigma.

Mental Health Disorders 

 Burnout and compassion fatigue are two big causes that play a factor into why psychologists and other mental health workers have a high rate of developing mental illness. In fact, according to a Medscape survey, 42% of psychiatrists and other mental health issues reported burnout.

Depression

Depression is a common disorder found in psychologists as it often can be caused by burnout and emotional fatigue

According to Psychology Today, a study done showed that 61% of psychologists report they have experienced clinical depression at least once in their lives. 

Suicidality

It is well known that there is a very high rate of sucidality among mental health professionals.  There have been some studies that indicate that about 30% felt suicidal and around 4% attempted suicide.
